Whenever I learn that I’m going to be spending the night on a friend’s  sofa bed mattress, I start to worry about how stiff and sore I’m going to be in the morning.

While some sofa beds offer a superb level of comfort, more often than not I know I’m going to be in for a rough night.

If only my friends knew that it doesn’t have to be that way.

I have made sure that the sofa bed in my own home contains the most comfortable mattress that was available so my friends and guests who stay over sleep as soundly as they do in their own beds.

Exactly how much you decide to spend will depend on how often your sofa bed is used and who sleeps there. If it is only ever pulled out very occasionally as an emergency measure, then you will want to keep your costs down as much as possible.

If, however, you`re like me, then your sofa bed will be in use virtually every week. If this is the case it may be worth investing a little more – before your guests start complaining!

The most common type of sofa bed mattress, especially on cheaper models, is the basic spring variety. This features a series of steel springs covered by a layer of padding.

Although this type of mattress works well on a standard bed, a sofa bed mattress needs to be thin enough to be able to fold up after use. This means the manufacturers are not able to put enough turns into the springs for them to provide the same level of support as they would in a larger mattress.

Level of Firmness

The thinnest coil mattresses are truly awful to sleep on as you can feel both the springs and the metal bars of the bed frame underneath. If your sofa bed mattress is of the spring coil variety, I suggest you replace it as quickly as possible.

One possible low cost replacement is to invest in an air mattress. These can be surprisingly comfortable and have the advantage of letting you adjust the level of firmness by adding more or less air.

I don`t recommend them though as it’s a bit of a pain having to inflate and deflate them every time you put the bed out.

The next option to think about is a standard foam mattress. This can provide a good level of comfort and firmness and is easy to fold in and out of the sofa bed mechanism. Be sure to check the density of the foam used to make the mattress. The higher the density, the more supportive the mattress will be.

Next up the scale is the latex sofa bed mattress.

Natural latex is made from the sap of rubber trees and is therefore a natural, ecologically friendly product.

As well as providing a firm, comfortable sleeping surface, latex has a number of other advantages.

Resistant to Bugs

If you suffer from allergies or are worried about dust mites, latex is a great choice as it is hypo-allergenic and highly resistant to all kinds of bugs.

This is because the air pockets inside the foam are permanently sealed away so there is nowhere for dust to accumulate or bugs to nest.

You`ll particularly want to investigate this option if you live in a small property and your sofa bed is in fact your main bed as it will completely transform the quality of your sleep.

Memory foam was originally created by NASA for use in aircraft as pilots had to remain sitting in one position for hours at a time and needed to remain comfortable.

Originally called ‘spring back foam’ the material has the ability to mould itself around your body when you lay on it. This means your weight is spread evenly across the entire surface of the mattress, relieving pressure on joints and your back.

Memory foam is also great at isolating movement. If two people are sharing your sofa bed and one is heavier than the other, traditional mattresses can cause them to roll together.

If you’re replacing a mattress that has been used for some time, measure the bed frame rather than the mattress to get the dimensions for the replacement.

Pay particular attention to the thickness of your sofa bed mattress. The standard size is between 4 and 5 inches but you need to check to make sure that your mattress is not thinner than this as if it is, you will having difficulty folding the bed once you have fitted your replacement.
